Thank you for your e-mail concerning Shell Optimax and Unleaded fuels.
Firstly, I would like to clarify that Shell Optimax is manufactured and refined at our Stanlow refinery at Ellesmere Port only. Shell then pipes the fuel through to our Buncefield refinery to increase the distribution through our network. Under no circumstances do we use competitor refineries to manufacture Shell Optimax.
Additionally, I can confirm that whilst fuel companies do use competitor refineries to obtain some of their base products for logistical reasons, it is certainly not the case that all the fuels coming from that refinery will be the same. For example, all Shell fuels have an additive package which is unique to Shell alone and would not be the same as any of our competitors.
Furthermore, Shell Optimax is a completely new product created exclusively by Shell for UK motorists who want to get the most from their car and from driving. It is the UK's best performance petrol with a specification which out performs all other petrols in the UK.
Shell Optimax was created by the same team of Shell technicians who develop fuels for the Ferrari F1 cars - it's the ultimate choice for all users of super unleaded and unleaded grades. Shell Optimax has been created in response to market research that revealed that a significant number of motorists wanted a petrol that gives them an extra edge.
The octane rating is 98, however, it is not just the octane rating that differentiates Shell Optimax from other unleaded fuels. Shell Optimax is a unique highly refined new formulation which burns more cleanly to give you smooth power delivery. It is able to do this becuase:
* as the petrol with the highest octane rating in the UK it enables advanced modern design engines to work more efficiently thereby delivering more power
*it has the ability to remove performance sapping deposits left by other fuels from the airways of the engine
*it is free of the heavy constituents of petrol that leave dirty residue in you engine.
The combination of these effects means that the fuel and air flow smoothly and quickly to the engine, buring more effectively to give you increased performance and a quicker response.
I hope the information above has helped to answer your queries, however, should you require any further information then please do not hesitate to contact me.
